Milia, also known as milk spots or oil seeds, are commonly seen on the face (often seen around the eyes, nose, and cheeks). These tiny white bumps are formed when the skin is unable to remove dead skin cells. These trapped dead skin cells will then form cysts below your skin surface, forming milia.
Is it harmful?
It is a benign skin lesion that will not cause any harm even if left untreated. People often get them removed due to cosmetic reasons.
What causes milia?
Milia can be seen in all age groups and skin types. Individuals who are more prone to developing milia are those with:
Prolonged sun damage - The ability of cells to exfoliate naturally is reduced.
Family members with milia
Uses thick skincare products
Poor exfoliation
Secondary to trauma and injury
Can it be removed?
Milia can be removed by a professional.
Avoid squeezing the milia at home as it may cause scarring and damages your skin barrier.
Can it be prevented?
Milia cannot be prevented entirely however with proper skin care it can help to reduce the chances of formation.
Exfoliates (either with a gentle exfoliator or superficial peels containing AHAs and BHAs) regularly to remove dead skin cells. Not only does this result in a lesser build-up of the cells, it also allows moisturizer to penetrate deeper layers of your skin = more effects from your skincare!
Apply topical retinoids
Retinoid is a derivative of Vitamin A. They help with your skin cell turnover (yes! They remove those dead skin cells!) and even up your skin texture. Retinol usually takes a few weeks for you to see results so don't be demotivated if you do not see improvement in the first week!
If you experience any redness or flaky skin when using a retinol cream, consult your doctor.
Do not use retinol if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Stay away from heavy face creams
Opt for lightweight face creams as these are less likely to clog your pores (this can also lead to acne!). Avoid applying face creams for your under eyes as the cream will be too thick for the skin hence leading to milia forming.
